Book Recommendations

Most of my recent blogs have been based on self-reflection.
Reflection of heart, mind, and soul. Checking in on oneself often.

I thought it an appropriate time to share a few books with you that have really helped me.
Each person learns a different way, when it comes to books like these I can’t just read and obtain the knowledge. I’ve got to write down some takeaways to really help the knowledge stick!

First book is by Dr. Caroline Leaf and is called Switch on your Brain.

It’s 201 pages in total.
There is an option to order a workbook separately.
I am a sucker for the workbooks as they help you write down your specific takeaways.
Which in turn lets you apply it specifically to your life.
This book blew my mind with the brain and the way it functions and how we as humans function as well.
I will be honest I’ve yet to walk through one of the 21-day brain detoxes fully. However, I started to adjust my thinking thanks to this book. It has a lot of science-based studies and biblical takes. Some of the science lost me at times.

Second book is by Jennie Allen and is called Get out of your Head.

It’s 227 pages in total.
This book is very similar to Switch on your Brain but with a lot less science. It explains things with a little more ease, it also comes loaded with lots of biblical scripture.

My favorite line in this book: It has been said – and I think it’s true – that the most valuable asset we possess is our attention, which prompts the question, To what are we attending? Pg 76.

Get out of your Head

Personally, I recommend both books. Each has plenty of takeaways.
These books helped me process some severe anxieties I’d developed. I never really considered myself an anxious person until I had kids. Then all of these vicious thoughts were relentless and attacking me every day. I started to become scared of every little thing. Something was going to take my children away.
Or take me from my children. There is so much in this world out of our control, so much that won’t or that could, might, or will happen. Thinking, overthinking, overanalyzing every possible outcome to something which may never happen…it’s exhausting. The anxiety was overwhelming.

I’d love to say these books were a one-stop quick fix. Alas, I’m human. The thoughts still come, sometimes after months of silence. Just when I think I’ve got it under control, a spiral hits.
These thoughts no longer live in my mind for weeks or months on end anymore though.
Most often I’m able to capture them within a few days.
