Growing up with naturally curly hair was…
Well, it’s one of those things in life, you are stuck with what you get.
You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.
Although I probably threw a fit or two along the way.
When I was in middle school I got it chemically straightened, which I will never again in my life do.
In high school, I wore it up 90% of the time. Dyed it way too often.
In College I straightened it too much it was unhealthy.
Ironically I’d straighten it with a curling Iron.
In my 30s I finally fell in love with it. I was also pregnant a lot in my 30s.
Not only was it curly but it was thick, thank you hormones.
After our 4th that post-pregnancy hair loss amped up 100%
I was 38 when our 4th joined the world. 38 with thinning hair.
Or possibly, thanks Covid – for the hair loss.
Here we are in my 40th year my hair half as full as it once was.
No matter the hair day though, I’m cool with it.
We’ve hit a rhythm my hair and I
I stopped trying
I’d try product after product.
If I found a product to work, it would stop within a few months.
So I had to find a backup product, then alternate between the two.
I’ve currently been using the same product for 4 years, you’ll find it below.
Total yearly spending on hair products: $188-200
Shampoo/Conditioner purchased 4 times a year
Styling Cream: 3 times a year.
Rough calculations – I can tell you I’ve never gone over $300. Which is like two trips to the salon.
(when you purchase product as well)
I go to the salon every few years. Otherwise, I use online hair tutorials and cut from home!
It’s as easy as 1,2,3
-
- Only wash your hair once or twice a week.
I do it twice, curly hair needs hydration.
- Only wash your hair once or twice a week.
-
- Condition it daily – a little goes a long way.
-
- Lock that moisture in. I do this using the two products below.
The product

I love all of their smells – top 2: Citrus or Sandalwood, I always get the seasonal ones as well! Get $10 off your first order here!
I have two styling products of choice.
1st. Hair Butter – from Earthley.com
2nd. Innersense – Quiet Calm Curl Control
I choose two styling methods I use hair butter one week and switch to Innersense the next. Alternating between the two. Hair butter used to be my least favorite thing. It goes on a little funky (paste like) but truly locks moisture in, and the paste feeling goes away once dry!
Shampoo and Conditioner is plastic free which is better for the environment.
Also takes up less shower space! Do yourself a favor and grab a wooden thing to hold the bars.
This will help them last longer!
The Conditioner is my favorite out of all the products I’ve tried with healthier-for-you ingredients!
If you’re interested in less toxic products check out: The Environmental Working Group or EWG for short.
You can find your current products and see how healthy they are for you.
I talk about them in my blog Trashing Toxins. Where you can also find links to more eco friendly products!
