When I was reading Micah 6:8 the other day (first, I got the song stuck in my head) I was thinking about how we walk in this world. The verse seems so straightforward. Honestly, it is. Yet, we as a people are prideful. Prideful people have a hard time setting down their pride, they’d rather hold on to it than lay it down in humility. I know this thanks to plenty of life experiences.
I love verses like this because they’re there as a tool to guide us. Sometimes when I’m falling short I dig a bit deeper into this type of guiding verse to build a stronger understanding of why I may be struggling, or to find more tools to help me strengthen my need to seek guidance in the first place.
I’m hoping to make sense of what I mean by this below.
Micah 6:8
No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you:
To do what is right, to love Mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
To do what is right
I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is the sin living in me that does. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. (Pride).
Romans 7:15-20 NLT
Paul tried to help the Romans see that we all struggle with sin. It’s why I shared the above verses in Romans, to show that To do what is right, isn’t easy, and most often we don’t do it, Instead, we do what we hate. The difference is we try. We are trying, we keep on trying to live a life such as Christ. The Lord sees us trying. We can only do what is right when we are walking with Jesus Christ, it’s in Him and through Him that we can even discern right and wrong. And because of Him, we want to choose the right path.
To Love Mercy
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:16 NLT
We love Mercy, because it is a gift from God, it isn’t something we have on our own. we receive His Mercy. His Mercies begin afresh each morning (Lamentations 3:23 NLT.) It is in His Mercy that we can then and only then have mercy on others. This is not something we can do on our own. Yet through Christ Jesus.
It’s in our Love for Jesus that we are able to love with compassion and forgiveness.
Walk Humbly with Your God
So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
James 1:21 NLT
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2
It’s impossible to walk Humbly with God when we’re holding onto our pride. Proverbs tells us straight up that pride leads to disgrace. We have to humble ourselves before God. We have to humbly accept the word God has planted in our hearts.
PLANTED IN OUR HEARTS YA’LL.
It’s already in there, tucked right into our hearts to keep us. To draw us closer to God.
Planted, so that it takes root in us and grows.
All of this to say, The Lord has told you what is good.
We, just need to set down the pride in us before we can listen.

I’ve been reading Romans with John. Same verses kept coming up. Must be the Holy Spirit is speaking. I’m listening. ❤️🙏🏻
I love when we get to feel those Holy Spirit moments!
Amen! This is an important message well articulated. As Jed Clampett said, “Jethro, you’ve got to put your pride in your pocket.”
