Perceptual Personality

Who doesn’t love a good personality assessment?

There is one out there called the Enneagram. Google it.

The Enneagram is a system of personality, which describes people in terms of nine types, each with their own motivations, fears, and internal dynamics. The Enneagram is an emotionally focused system of understanding people — honing in on one’s core emotional motivations and fears.

Google

Out of all the personality assessments I’ve taken in life I’d say this one hit closest to who I am.
Most others I’ve taken in life have been focused on who I am at work, this one is straight personality.

I am a 7 which is labeled The Entertaining Optimist – Playful/Excitable/Versatile/Scattered/Escapist

Type Sevens are joyful, enthusiastic, and social people that radiate optimism in all situations.

Perceptual Personality

Perceptual – relating to the ability to interpret or become aware of something through the senses.

Generally speaking, we often live life on autopilot.
Doing as we’ve always done, what we’ve learned from those who have come before us.
Also what we have learned through our own trial and error as people within the environment we surround ourselves with at any given time. Therefore sometimes we can go through life unaware of who we are at our core. This can be a dangerous state in which to live.

Therefore, let your senses fly!
Basically, I’m saying pay attention to your sight, taste, touch, and smell.
Becoming aware of all that is around you, who you are, and what you are bringing to this world.
Is it positive or negative?
Could you stand to challenge yourself to grow?
Does your path help or hurt others?
We tend to assess everyone around us.
So why not assess ourselves as well?

The Enneagram

Is a start for plugging into who you are.
It does not, nor should it, define you.
It just helps to paint a picture of your traits and habits.
This will help you to see areas of growth in your life.

I found it challenging to read as it was worded in a way that painted a clearer picture of myself.
Things I already knew and had already been working on.
Also, areas I’d buried deep down because they would take deeper work.
Which is a classic move for a #7.
We like to keep things positive and happy.
The negative we tend to ignore or spin into a how can I make this happy situation.
Which can result in fixing something at the surface versus at the core.

I will say that I wish I’d taken one of these in College.
If I’d taken it and assessed myself back then I wonder if my 20s would have turned out slightly different. However, I also have to say Tabula Rasa.
What’s done is done.
20-year-old me may not have taken the Enneagram.
Let alone learn anything from it because that would have taken dealing with emotions.

Focus Forward

So I grab my top 3 takeaways from the assessment.
Areas in my life that could use some TLC.
Now that I am aware of them and also at a point in life where I am ready to change them.
I have a starting place.

Whether you want to take the assessment for yourself for fun, or for gaining knowledge of your personality traits I will share the one I took with you.

The Enneagram link that I am providing says that it’s Christian-based.
It will also share ways in which walking with the Lord will only strengthen your personality style when you put it into the perspective of being Christ’s beloved child.

This is a snippit of my results…

Type Sevens become more grounded in the present moment and able to savor it with a grateful heart. When their heart is aligned with the Gospel. Trusting that God will fulfill their internal longings, more receptive and thoughtful qualities emerge. When we combine this with their natural creativity and energy, they’ll inspire others as they walk through the highs and lows of life.

I can’t say it enough we aren’t meant to walk this world alone.
We’re meant to do it together, part of doing it together is knowing how one another functions.
Personalities can either crash into one another or find a way to thrive together.
Let me know in the comments below if you take the assessment!
I’d love to hear your results!
